Headband Central

This is my weekend in a nutshell:

I got on a little headband kick. It was so much fun! I made the flowers out of organza but I've started experimenting with felt a little bit too. Part of me wants to try to sell them on Etsy but the other pathetic part of me wants to keep them to myself.

I think I wear headbands too often.

On another note, I ordered my first swimsuit of the season on Saturday. I didn't even think twice about the one that I picked out. It was frilly, so I wanted it. Later I realized that it's got a lot of hot pink and other bright colors and that maybe 25 is too old to wear hot pink frills.

I complain about people thinking I'm in high school... but then I wear flower headbands and bright colored bathing suits.

What gives? Maybe I'll just embrace it while I still can.

Up and Away

I really don't have much to say today, but I saw this picture and loved it. It makes me crave spring even more. I've found myself visiting Pantone's site an embarrassing amount of times just to look at the loveliness of the "in" colors for Spring 2011.

Would it be acceptable to re-paint the walls in your home to match the colors of every season?

I would never do that by the way. Unless I had a free painting service available to do the work.

Have a happy, springy, Friday!!!!

Awkward/Awesome Thursday

-I was really nervous getting on the plane ride from DFW to Lubbock the other day because I wasn't sure who I was going to have to sit next to. This may sound like a silly thing to worry about, but I'm a very inexperienced plane person, and I also don't know how to be rude and ignore someone if they start chatting my ear off. At the same time, I hate conversing with strangers... so what can you do?! Luckily it was an older man who was intent reading his book. It was still really awkward though, because he was larger than me and obviously assumed that he could take up 25% of my seat/floor space and the whole arm rest. Then he fell asleep while reading, jolted awake, and kept breathing out of his mouth. His breath smelled terrible.

-Walking next to a stranger and somehow falling into the same pace. Do you slow down (risking having to get to your destination at a later time)? Speed up (and then having to walk ultra fast to avoid the person catching up with you again)? Stay at the same pace (and hope they don't make small talk)?

-Girls (and I'm talking stylish girls) up North trying to make Duck Boots look cute. Sorry. Ain't gonna happen.

-Speaking of boots, the other day I wore denim shorts with leggings and Uggs. While going through security at the airport, the officer lady said, "That look must be really in style right now. My 5 year old daughter begs to wear the exact same thing!" Uhh... thanks?

-Being a bitter TAKS Test person during the peak of TAKS Test season while being surrounded by overly eager co-workers. 'Nough said.

-Spring break is only 2 and a half weeks away!!!!

-In preparation for summer, I bought new nail polish yesterday! OPI's Aphrodites Pink Nightie. I still don't feel like painting my toe nails just yet though.

-I discovered a new way to make headbands last night! I skipped tap class because making them was so important.

-The freedom that you are given as an adult. I can skip dance class, or whatever I want, because no one can MAKE me go to anything that I don't feel like going to. My pesky conscious has a way of never letting me skip anything anyway, but it's definitely awesome on the rare occasion that it's too exhausted to fight back.

-I never have to think of a title for my posts on Awkward/Awesome Thursdays.

Airport Love

Today is a travel day after a fun weekend spent in Denver. With all of the time that I'm going to have to kill in airports today, you would think that I would create a super exciting blog post. Unfortunately, I've been awake since 4:15 and I'm just too exhausted and frustrated to mess with it. Instead I'll just keep staring out the window at a clear blue sky and our plane, which has been sitting here idly since the original 7:15 departure time. A "part replacement" has caused a three and a half hour delay, which will cause us to miss our connection flight later in the day.

So instead of writing a fun post I'm going to re-read Redeeming Love and try to calm the Type A in me that  is stressed about getting home several hours later than expected and not being able to complete the to-do list that needed to be completed by bed time. Ahhhhh.

See you soon!

Awkward/Awesome Thursday

-This one has REALLY been an annoyance this week. You know how sometimes when you order a coke with a styrofoam cup and lid, there's too much pressure inside the cup and the lid doesn't fit very well? So then little dribbles of coke keep mysteriously escaping and sliding down the cup, making the cup holders in your car sticky and disgusting? And no matter how many times you try to clean it up and mash down the lid... it.just.keeps.happening? Oh man. Today was like the third day this week that I've had to traipse back out to my car with a Clorox wipe after I get to school to clean up my cup holders.
{I took this in-between coke dribbles, but at least you can see the ill-fitting lid}

-Getting makeup on your black pants and using a napkin from the school cafeteria to try to clean it off, only to realize that the napkin literally fell apart into a million little white pieces creating a white stain the size of a tennis ball. What in the world do they make these napkins out of?!

-Speeding down Pioneer drive every morning trying to beat the two buses that frequently come down the street in the opposite direction and make me stop to wait until every high school student has boarded. I'm not trying to be mean or anything... but let's just say that some of these students cross the street and get on the bus more slowly than any old person I've ever seen because they're having to hold their pants up while they walk.

-Awkwards that are more than 3 sentences long. Sorry.

-Switching between old Saved by the Bell re-runs and Abrams and Bettes on the Weather Channel while I get ready for work every morning.

-This purple pen.
I got one for free when I worked at TTUHSC and have been trying to conserve the beautiful ink for 2 years now. I finally had to break down and order another one even though it cost me $12 with shipping.

-Garage sale stickers. I use them to bribe my students. These children are obsessed. You would think they were college football players collecting pride stickers on their helmets.

-The "hide" option on Facebook's mini-feed. Here lately this feature seems to be most necessary for "hiding" posts by pregnant girls who cannot help but update their statuses 14 times a day with a play-by-play about their pregnancies. I'm sorry... I just don't care THAT much. No offense.

All Sorts of Crazy

Chocolate Chip Cookie Pie. You must make it. I can't believe I never knew such a pie existed before now.

In other news, the blog is getting neglected this week. I'm in charge of putting together our new school website and it goes live on Thursday.

Tomorrow I have my first formal observation by my principal.

I basically have no life right now.

On top of that, I literally turned every drawer in the house upside-down two or three times tonight trying to find something. Sometimes I feel like I have the brain of a hamster when I start looking for a lost item. I honestly cannot function or focus on anything else until the object is found. Tonight's object remains in hiding. Instead of lying awake all night worrying about tomorrow's observation, I'll be mentally going through every drawer, closet, and rubbermaid in the house.

Better get started. Goodnight!

Spring Fever

We've had temperatures in the 60s this weekend!!!! It seems like it has been so long since I could wear short sleeves - even in the house.

I decided to put on some shorts, grab a magazine, my lounge chair, and venture out into the backyard for some sunshine.

look like spring?

Look like spring to you? Yeah, me neither. The lack of green grass and painted toenails are totally a give away.

The backyard squirrels were excited about the warm weather too.

It's official. Spring fever is setting in hardcore now. I'm probably going to be heartbroken at least a dozen times before spring actually comes true.

Awkward/Awesome Thursday

I kind of forgot that today was Thursday for a little bit. Maybe it's because I broke the rules and wore jeans to school today, therefore tricking myself into thinking it was Friday.

-The other day I went to the gym and there was a lone Texas Country singer randomly performing quite loudly in the main workout area. Of course he only wanted to play songs that he had written himself. It's not easy to work out to country songs... especially ones that you've never heard. I wasn't able to drown him out with my iPod either.

-Talking about the gym in my blog as if that's a normal thing. Don't get the idea that I go to the gym often. Unfortunately, I don't. Any awkward workout stories occur on the one day a week that I might go to the gym.

-Phone calls. I haaaaaate talking on the phone. I'm fine with it if it's someone that I talk to or have talked to frequently in the past. Anyone beyond that - hate it. Always have. Even if it's something as simple as my pharmacy calling to remind me to pick up my prescription. No way am I going to pick up that phone call.

-A kid in one of my classes today said, "What's that thing on your chin?!!" to her student teacher. The student teacher had an awkward expression, didn't respond, and held her turtleneck over her chin for several minutes afterward.
I don't know what, if anything, was on her chin... but even I felt awkward because her reaction was so strange.

-Last Saturday morning I decided to open a can of cinnamon rolls. It had been a while since I had tasted the greatness. I got the pan all ready and started putting them on it when I noticed that one of them had MOLD on it!!! The really sad part of this story is that I'm easily mortified by this kind of thing and may not be able to eat cinnamon rolls again for quite some time. :(

-No Strings Attached. Chels and I went to see it while I was in Lubbock a couple of weeks ago and I LOVED it! I think it was the best movie I've seen in two or three years. It was so cute!

-Ethan is out of town for work, so maybe I'll go see the movie again by myself!

-I read earlier this week that the next iPhone might also be your wallet and your car keys.

-The freezing weather has given me an excuse to wear one of my two Patagonia pullovers every single day without having to feel guilty about it.

-The same goes for wearing my Target moccasin slippers in public.

-I just said two positive things about cold weather in a row.

Lunch Rut

I'm stuck in a lunch rut. Again. These ruts usually consist of me eating the same thing over and over every single weekday for weeks. Then, like magic, I'm suddenly sickened by the thought of eating whatever it is and abruptly switch to something else.

My current rut is a lunch combo that seems to re-occur about once a year:

Grape Uncrustable + Colby Jack cheese cubes + Nacho Cheese Doritos with two Thin Mints for dessert.

If you're ever looking for a delicious snack, I have to say that Nacho Cheese Doritos and Colby Jack Cubes are the BEST EVER!

Before that I was stuck on the Stouffer's stuffed ham and cheese sandwich with tomato soup:

I really need to learn to branch out. Or start eating in the cafeteria again.

So I went to the eye doctor a couple of weeks ago and I had to get some new glasses. I wear contacts 100% of the time but keep a pair of glasses for emergencies. My last pair had red frames. Not sure what I was thinking. I found a pair that I was immediately drawn to (probably only because Jessica Simpson designed them, but whatev) and got them without even trying on another pair. Yep... on very rare occasions I am able to make decisions in an instant. This only seems to happen with non-important things such as cars, glasses, colleges, that sort of thing.

This was my attempt to take a picture of them for you...

Funny thing is, apparently taking a picture with your computer while wearing glasses is next to impossible. I had to awkwardly turn my head to the side because there was no other way to even partially escape the pesky reflection of my computer screen.

Who knew? How do people who wear glasses Skype? Or... FaceTime? How will people who wear glasses fend in the technological future?!

Thank goodness for contacts.

Winter Lifesavers

5 products that I couldn't have made it through the winter without:
1. {Burt's Bees Beeswax Hand Cream} -- I discovered this stuff in the gift shop at Cracker Barrel of all places. I still lived in Lubbock at the time, and my hands would go through ridiculous dry spells that would cause my knuckles to crack and bleed. A disgusting, embarrassing problem. I put this on my knuckles whenever they start to get dry and the problem is quickly solved. Bleeding knuckles no more!
2. {Camille Beckman Glycerine Hand Therapy} -- My grandmother used to sell this lotion line at her clothing store when I was younger. I got addicted to Camille Beckman products at a VERY young age. When she closed the store in 2004, she stashed away several years worth of lotion for the women in our family. We used the last tub a few months ago, but I have since discovered a local drugstore that still sells it. This is seriously the best hand lotion in the world.
3. {Jergen's Natural Glow Foaming Daily Moisturizer} -- I gave up tanning last year and was very fearful that I would turn into a ghost this winter. I apply this stuff every three or four days to get a subtle glow that's appropriate for the long winter days.
4. {Matrix Biolage Conditioning Balm} -- I use this in place of my regular conditioner once a week to prevent breakage and dryness. Love it.
5. {Ballmania Lip Gloss} -- This is a random Dillard's find that I'm thankful for every day. It has all the advantages of using Vaseline on your lips without the Vasilene-y feel and smell. Definitely the best lip gloss I've found.

One year!

Happy first birthday, sweet little blog. I'm giving you a facelift for your birthday! I promise to never neglect you. Here's to another fun year...

Awkward/Awesome Thursday

-Snow Day #3. I'm losing my mind people.

-Sometimes (when I know that I'm not going to go in public at all) I like to wear my hair in a ballerina-esque bun. I don't typically wear it like this in public because it seems like a weird thing to do. There are certain days that it will twist into the perfect bun on the first try. Other days, I will re-do it 5, 6, 7 times and am still unable to get it right. Even though I know I'm not going to be going out much that day, I still absolutely refuse to give up until I have the perfect bun. It drives me absolutely nuts. Today I literally tried 8 different times before I got it to look somewhat acceptable.

-I almost always cry at some point when I watch an episode of Grey's Anatomy. This will never make sense to me.

-Living on the same street as several of my students. A little while ago I decided to venture out into the front yard and attempt to take my first step on the snow in order to test the slipperiness. I observed my surroundings, saw one of my kids outside a few houses down, and ran back inside. Can't risk busting or being caught wearing sweats by a 10 year old.

-All of the awkwards that have come to mind involve my snow day adventures. How quickly life becomes meaningless when you haven't ventured further than your porch in 72 hours (and counting).

-The Instagram App. I'm sure you've noticed that I'm slightly obsessed. Will I ever use my real camera again?

-Last Friday I had several hours to kill in Lubbock while Chelsea was at work. The weather was so nice that I went running at the park in shorts and a t-shirt. Afterwards I went to Spoonful for a cup of delicious yogurt. Now THAT was the life.
-I was supposed to present at a workshop after school today. Obviously, that workshop has been postponed. This point will remain in the awesome category until that day arrives.

-Spray paint can give anything new life and make strange things look cool. Such as this random wire chicken that now resides in the living room:

-I will end with a tentative awesome: What if school is cancelled again tomorrow??? And we have a 6 day weekend? That would be the BEST. Assuming that I would actually be able to leave my house.

Day 2

Life is still on hold today. I can feel summer getting further and further away.

At least the rolling blackouts are keeping me on my toes. When will the next one be and for how long? How cold will the house become? Will I be in the midst of doing something that involves electricity? So many possibilities.

I'm sure I'll just be cleaning like always.

Snow Day!!

I went to sleep last night with high hopes of a few overnight snowflakes. The weathermen were predicting 8-10 inches... but let's be honest, this is Abilene. I didn't want to get TOO excited about the possibilities because there's nothing more depressing than waking up for work, looking out the window with hopes of icy roads worthy of a late start, and seeing nothing but the same old dry brown grass.

This morning was the best though! I woke up around 4 and looked out the window to a few inches of snow. I went back to sleep for a couple of hours and when I woke up again... school was cancelled!!
snow day!

Snow Day 11

Believe it or not we actually got around 6 inches of snow. It's a miracle!

I never know how I feel about full-fledged snow days. I'm not easily entertained at home. I hate feeling trapped inside and not being able to get out and run errands. My idea of the perfect day off usually includes a lot of errands.

I had big plans for catching up on Tivo'd episodes of Grey's Anatomy and Brothers and Sisters. Of course that didn't happen because I got distracted by household chores (hence the reason why I hate spending my days off at the house). I should probably seek help for my inability to actually relax at home without feeling incredibly guilty about all of the things that "need" to be done around the house. Especially since usually I'm really stretching to think of things that haven't already been done.

But that's a story for another day.

Regardless, it's been a nice day off! Much better than being at school. Summer break will no longer be happening on May 24th... but what's one more day?
